Coaching Mini-Rugby – Introducing the Game of Rugby to Children in a Safe and Controlled Environment
The future of any rugby club is moulded in the ranks of the Mini-Rugby teams. Mini-Rugby covers teams from Under 7 (Leprechauns) through to Under 12. Here in Ennis we are blessed with plenty of youngsters, and we can field at least one team in each age grade (2 in most) where there are organised festivals, U8, U9, U10, U11, and U12.
The primary responsibility and concern of coaches at this level is to introduce the game of rugby in a safe and controlled manner that is appropriate for the abilities of each age grade. We do this by using the framework set out by IRFU, and issued from Munster Branch, The Long Term Player Development (LTPD). This framework is delivered to coaches in Training Workshops delivered by Munster Rugby Coaching Officers and Development Officers that are held regularly. All coaches are encouraged to attend this course and also to attend follow up courses.
