Ennis player called up for Ireland U19's

There was good news for Ennis RFC this week with confirmation that Ennis player Lukas Kunz has been named on the Irish U19 schools panel to play Australia at the UCD campus on Friday, November 27th.

Now a student at St Munchin’s College in Limerick, Lukas is no stranger to Munster underage squads and also got a trial for the U-18 Ireland squad last season.

Lukas generally plays as a centre however in recent trial games he has been selected on the wing.

He is the first Ennis player to be called up for an Irish squad since Aidan Considine was part of the Ireland U19 team back in 1998.

Are you a Sports Volunteer? – If so, please read on …

The Irish Sports Council has commissioned research to investigate the needs, capacities, and profile of the Irish volunteers working with children’s and youth sport and physical activity programmes.  It is part of a larger study investigating the sport and physical activity patterns of children and youth.

The aim of the study is to investigate how best to enhance the experience for all involved in sport and physical activity, including the volunteer.

The research team is eager to hear from volunteers and club administrators about the volunteer experience, examples of best practice, and barrier to recruiting and maintaining a volunteer workforce. This will be done through an online survey that will take no more than 15 minutes to complete.

This is the first in-depth study in Ireland to focus on the volunteer experience.  Those who participate in the study are entered into a prize draw.

Administrators are placed in a draw to win a 3 day training camp for their club and the volunteers have the opportunity to win sports vouchers. Visit the web address below for more details on the prizes.

The online survey is located on the Irish Sports Council website

Ennis RFC AGM - June 2nd, 2009

The Annual General Meeting of the Ennis Rugby Football club was held in the Clubhouse at Drumbiggle on Tuesday last.

A good turn out on a fine evening heard outgoing President Johnny King state the he was pleased with the progress of the last year in relation to club facilities with the addition of the new Gym and car park. He congratulated eight players from the club who wore the red of Munster with distinction.

The reality of the current economic situation was stressed by both Mr. King and incoming President Tony Guilfoyle. The Club is however in a healthy financial situation thanks to the Work of Mary Meehan, Geraldine Guilfoyle and Sean Sheedy who worked so hard on the club draw. However we must accept that fundraising will be more difficult into the future.

The following were elected for the coming year:

President - Tony Guilfoyle
Honorary Secretary - Gemma Casey
Honorary Treasurer - Mary Meehan
Youths Officer - TBC
Honorary Fixtures Secretary - David English
Club Registrar - Séan Sheedy

Four Ennis players in Munster U16 squad

It has been a long year for a number of the Ennis under 16 squad who were part of the successful North Munster Development Squad.

The work started approximately one year ago where there were a number of players invited to trials in Limerick, eventually out of over 60 players the final squad was reached with 30 players for clubs all over North Munster.

Following considerable dedication and hard work on all the players involved, the number of players who represented Ennis RFC was finally reduced down to four. The four players who have been successful in securing a place on the squad following competition from players from North, South, East and west Munster are Dylan Tynan-O’Mahony, Rory Skeritt, Eanna Talty and David O’Connor. They recently received their winner's medals at a presentation in Limerick.

It is a great boost for the Ennis club to see players getting this opportunity and to be part of the development squad. This success it shows the hard work that is being done at underage level in Ennis RFC and it look strong for the future. The contribution of the coaches of the North Munster Squad, who coached these players twice a week in all types of weather conditions, must also be recognised. They brought a group of under 16’s from North Munster together to play as a successful team and to become better players as a result of being part of the development system. The squad who did not know one another a year ago have now become great friends which is very important in sport as well.

Picture shows L/R Dylan Tynan-O’Mahony, Rory Skeritt, Eanna Talty, David O’Connor and Hugh McGrath the head coach of the North Munster Development squad at the medal presentation.

Two Ennis players named on Munster junior team

“I knew we had put some good structures in place and they were beginning to show dividends, but little did I believe in my wildest dreams that we would have seven Munster Jersey’s at the end of the season.” The comments of Ennis President Johnny King following the announcement of the Munster junior side to play Leinster in Cashel on Saturday Kick off 3:00p.m.

The Murphy brothers, David and Bryan, have been named in the side (Davy in the centre and Bryan on the bench), this follows on five U18’s earlier in the season “and we could have had another one but Gavin Murphy (no relation) was dropped from the panel at the final cut last week.

The junior side drawn from the All Ireland Qualifying league clubs, to give it it’s proper title, play their inter-provintial series over the next three weekend with Leinster in Cashel on Saturday. Ulster in the North on May 2nd (the same day as the Heineken cup semi final in Croke Park) Munster have requested an early kick off to allow the players get to Dublin for the game, as Ulster refused to play on Sunday. The series culminating in Headford on Saturday May the 9th away to Connaught.

Davy being presented with his "Cap" (tie) by Paul Griffin, Chairman Munster Junior Committee.

This will be David’s first start for Munster, Bryan has already played Junior and U21 for Munster and it means three Munster caps in the Murphy household, older brother Colin having played Munster and Irish Schools along with the for the Munster Junior side.

David (with son Danny) and Brian Murphy proudly wear their Munster shirts

Munster won the title two years ago and shared it in last season, thus retaining their crown, so they go into Saturday’s game as slight favourites but with two away games the draw is not favourable. However, the home advantage in round one they will be hoping for a good start on Saturday.

Leinster have some very strong junior sides in Navan, Tullamore (both of whom contested the All Ireland Junior Cup final earlier this year) Cill Dara etc. and Navan having already qualified for Division 3 of the All Ireland League. So their players will be available to Leinster, while Munster will be without their Cashel players this weekend when they Play Sunday’s Well in the All Ireland League relegation, promotion play off. Ironically also on Saturday at 2:30.

Speaking with one of the Munster selectors Christy Mc Namara (St. Mary’s) he feels Munster are at least as strong as last year if not stronger and believes they have more than a fighting chance of retaining the championship.

O2 Engage

Did you know that all O2 mobile phone customers can have 5% of their monthly bill directed as a contribution to their own rugby club?

How it works:

Your nominated Club will receive a “contribution” from O2 equivalent to 5% of your standard monthly charge (exclusive of VAT), plus 5% of any additional voice and text spend. The 5% contribution will be calculated on the basis of your monthly spend on voice and text.

This includes line rental (exclusive of VAT), and excludes data, premium services and international roaming. (For example, an O2 Clear customer paying a €35 standard monthly charge under their current price plan will generate a minimum contribution of €1.75/month for their nominated Club.)

O2 will make payments to your nominated participating Club every 12 months. The first payment will be on 31 March 2009.

O2 will not make contributions to any participating Club until a minimum contribution of €200 has been reached. Where the 5% contribution from you and all of the O2 Engage customers who have nominated your Club does not reach this minimum level, O2 will keep that donation on account for your Club until the next payment date (which will be within 6 months) and all of the revenues generated will be contributed together. Should your nominated Club not have reached €200 by December 1st 2009, O2 will bring your contribution up to the nearest €100, to a maximum of €200 and issue the cheque at this point.

In order to find out how much you have raised for your Club you can call customer care on 1909, 6 months from the commencement date of the trial. Business users should contact their O2 Account Manager.

Eligible customers can register for “O2 Engage” by sending a free text message with keyword ‘RUGBY’ to 50308. Following the receipt of this message, registrants will then be asked to reply with the chosen name of the IRFU affiliated rugby club (the “Club”) they wish to nominate to participate in “O2 Engage”.

As the club would appreciate any funding it receives, this is a great way of generating extra money for Ennis RFC. Please register now. Your help and contribution is appreciated.

Three Ennis RFC players named in Ireland U-18's squad

Three Ennis RFC players have been named in the Ireland U-18's squad.

Following the recent Youth Inter-provincials, the Ireland Under-18 Clubs management team named a squad of 39 players including Ennis lads Gearoid Crowe, Lucas Kuntz and Stephen Collins to attend the first training camp of the 2008/09 season.

This is the beginning of their quest to select a 26-man squad to play in the 2008/09 FIRA-AER European Under-18 Championships, which this year will be held in Toulon (Cote D'Azure) in France from April 2 to 12.

This camp is the first of a programme of camps drawn up by the Under-18 Clubs management as part of their preparations. Further weekend camps will be held on November 28 to 30 and December 28 to 30, before the second phase of the interprovincials takes place.

The play-offs - Connacht clash with Leinster and Ulster face Munster in the semi-finals followed by the third-fourth place play-off and the final - will take place on January 24 and 31.

These games are seen as an integral part of the Ireland Under-18 programme as they give players a final opportunity to break into the Ireland squad.

Ennis RFC U16 players recently returned from a very successful tour to Biarritz. There was great interest in the tour and twenty-nine players travelled with twelve adults including coaches and parents.

The tour headed off early on Thursday October 16th on a flight from Shannon and returned last Saturday afternoon.

Following a short sight seeing tour of Biarritz on the first day, the group went enjoyed a few surfing lessons which were organised at the world famous surfing beaches of Biarritz. Other activities were also arranged in the afternoon at Soustons on the FrenchandRugby camp site where we used the fantastic on site facilities including the high wire activity.

The following day the Ennis group prepared for the match against local team from Tyrosse , this was a game played in blue skies and sunshine and played with the true French flair of running rugby from both sides.

All of the twenty-nine players who travelled played in the game and which was a very close contest with the local team running out winners in the end. The real winners on the occasion were all the players from both teams who took part.

After the game there was a reception at the clubhouse in the sunshine where there was presentation and exchange of gifts from players on both teams. An invitation was extended to the Tyrosse team to come to Ireland and have a return fixture at Ennis RFC.

Following the game the Ennis group travelled to watch a top European Challenge Cup game between local teams Bayonne and Mont de Marsan which was followed by a dinner which provided a great finish to a memorable tour to France .

Three members of Ennis RFC have been selected for the Irish U 18’s trials which will be held later this month.

They are: Back row Gearoid Crowe and centres Stephen Collins and Lucas Kunz.

Ennis Club President John King congratulated the players and wished them well at the trials which will be held at the end of October.

Mr King added, "These young men, along with a number of others, have shown great potential over the last number of years and have been a credit to their family’s, coaches the club but more importantly to themselves. They have come through our ranks since under 8’s except for Lucas who moved to Ennis a little later and have learned from our coaching structure, that of the coaches in North Munster and Munster youths."

He also stressed the need to ensure that they are managed well as players over the next couple of years. "While we are all delighted for the lads we must also remember these are still only teenagers with all the stresses that face any young person, preparing for state examinations, discovering girls, if they have not already done so and generally learning about life.

We as a club not only have a duty to develop these young men and their peers as players but also to play our part in ensuring they become well rounded young adult".

It is now hoped that the Ennis trio will follow in the footsteps of club members Pa Conlon and Aiden Considine who have worn the green of Ireland at under 18’s and Luke O’Dea from Ennis who plays his rugby with Shannon R.F.C.
